NEW ULM — After piling up impressive scores all season long, New Ulm freshman gymnast Kayla Goblirsch will compete at the 2019 State Gymnastics Tournament at the University of Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion this Saturday.

This will be her first appearance at state for gymnastics.

Goblirsch, competing in the Class A Individual and All-Around Championships at 11 a.m. Saturday, has specialized in the vault this year. But after a solid all-around score last Thursday in the Section 2A meet, she showed off an ability to do it all and earned the right to compete in every event at state.

“It was exciting because I just wanted to make it on something, I didn’t even care what,” Goblirsch said. “So I was just excited to make it for all-around.”

Goblirsch competed with the Mankato Area Gymnastics School the last six years before returning back home to New Ulm for her first year of high school gymnastics.

“I just wanted to come back to try something different,” Goblirsch said of her return. “I was doing the same thing for the last six years, and I thought it would be really cool to try to make it to state.”

For anyone that has watched Goblirsch compete this year or even simply read about her, it’s not a huge surprise to see her achieving that goal of making it to state. During her time with New Ulm this year, she has set season bests and career bests in the vault (9.65), beam (9.4) and all-around (37.25).

“She’s had a pretty consistent year, in fact I don’t think she’s lost a vault title all year,” New Ulm head coach Kortney Peterson said. “I knew that that event was for sure going to be something she would qualify on and the rest just depending on the day — and she had a good day.”

Goblirsch added that she’s enjoyed her time with her New Ulm teammates this year.

“I really like the team and it was a fun season,” Goblirsch said.

But that fun season isn’t quite over for Goblirsch, though. She’ll be looking to continue that fun on Saturday in her attempts to become a state champion.
