NEW ULM — With three wins on Friday night at New Ulm High School, New Ulm Area’s Sean Howk passed 200 career wins in quadrangular wrestling action against Windom/Mt. Lake, Redwood River Valley and Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie.

Howk now sits at 201 career wins.

As a team, NUA dropped its first two duals of the night against W/ML (47-28) and RRV (55-22) before defeating GSL/LP 48-24.

Howk, now the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 145 pounds in Class AA and 36-1 this season, picked up win No. 200 after a 14-6 decision over RRV sophomore Joe Anderson in his second match of the night. Anderson managed to grab one takedown in the second period against Howk, but Howk remained composed and finished off the third period with a 2-point near fall for the final score.

Howk had to wait a little longer than anticipated for win No. 200 after back-to-back weeks of tough winter conditions postponing a majority of high school athletic events in the area. But after the big win, the senior was still proud to make even more history at NUHS after setting the NUHS career wins record earlier this season.

“It was kind of a long wait, but as long as you get it, it’s kind of a nice hump to get over now,” Howk said. “So now I can focus on the end of the year and sections coming up next week.”

Howk also said that he owed a lot to past and present coaches and teammates for pushing him to succeed and helping him along the way.

“It’s really nice, but I’ve got to credit a lot of the guys that have helped me along the way,” Howk said. “I’ve always had someone push me. When I came in as a seventh-grader, the seniors on the team like Jagger Hoffmann and Austin Brandes really took me under their wing and I went 30-7 as a seventh-grader, which most people don’t do, but it was one of the best seasons I’ve had, too. Every year, Hunter Ranweiler, Ryan Wacker, guys like that, pushing me in the room, Cole Ranweiler now. I’ve had someone to wrestle with every year that I just had to wrestle hard every time, no sloughing off in practice.”

Howk picked up a pin over W/MLA’s Esteban Sandoval in his first match of the night at 2:42 and defeated GSL/LP’s Zach Voelz in his final match by a 3-0 decision.

Also going 3-0 on the night for NUA was Carter Brandes at 113 pounds, who finished with two pins.

RRV’s Tayte Harazin, Class AA’s No. 4-ranked wrestler at 145, picked up a 9-0 major decision over NUA’s Cole Ranweiler in his second match of the night at 152. The first three minutes saw a stalemate between the two until Harazin grabbed his first takedown in the second period.

Harazin had a 2-point near fall near the end of the second period, a takedown in the third and a 3-point near fall in the third for the final score.

Also for the Badgers, Kaleb Haase, No. 1-ranked Class AA wrestler at 220, pinned NUA’s Ethan Dake in 39 seconds and Chad Maddock, the No. 7 Class AA heavyweight, picked up a pin over NUA’s Colby Wenninger with just a second left in the first period.
