Column: Despite loss to Tigers on Friday, Greyhounds are still playing well

Friday night in New Ulm Cathedral’s home game against Springfield in a Tomahawk Conference game, the Cathedral Greyhounds did something that no team has done against the one-loss Tigers all season.

They outscored the Tigers 66-55 in the last 28 minutes of the game.

Unfortunately for Cathedral, the 30-16 lead that Springfield took in the first eight minutes of the game was too much to overcome as the Tigers improved to 8-1 in conference play and remained one game behind first place Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 8-0 in conference play.

Cathedral remains in third place at 7-3 but came within a possession or a defensive stop of making the conference race very interesting.

Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas thought that the Tigers are a team that can really get off to fast starts as was the case Friday.

“They can really score in bunches,” he said. “You have to limit the amount of runs that they get throughout the game. You do not want to dig yourself a 14-point hole but our kids did a good job of battling back.”

The ability to respond and come back from a double-digit deficit is something that good teams have the ability to do but it can come at a price.

Teams use a lot of energy in the comeback.

“We had good energy in the gym and I do not think that we got tired [Friday] we just came up a little short,” Woitas said.

“Both teams competed and battled and it was a playoff atmosphere and that is good for both teams this time of year.”

It is no secret that the Greyhounds are a team that can legitimately compete with any team in Section 2A.

“We believe that, we have had two very close games with Minnesota Valley Lutheran (a 76-73 loss) and Springfield. We have some things to work on. We are one possession away.”

It has been talked about all season that Section 2A may be the toughest section from top to bottom in Minnesota regardless of the class size.

“We have six or seven teams in our section that are as talented as any other section,” Woitas said. “Our section is going to be almost a mini-state tournament.”

Give me section teams Springfield (14-2), MVL (15-1 following a 58-45 win over Thorp, Wisconsin on Saturday), BOLD (17-0) Cathedral (12-3), Mayer Lutheran (10-5), Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey (13-2) and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (15-1) against any other section’s top seven teams — regardless of class size — and I will be very confident of winning all of the games.
