Eagles blank Fairmont, 10-0

NEW ULM — How dominant were the New Ulm Eagles girls’ hockey team in their Big South Conference game against Fairmont Tuesday night at the New Ulm Civic Center?

Fairmont got its first shot on goal at the 6:26 mark of the second period.

By then the Eagles had built a 6-0 lead and would go on to roll by the Cardinals 10-0.

Ashtyn Wiltscheck and Molly Scheid each recorded a hat trick for New Ulm (12-7-1, 8-1-1). Jackie Cowing added two goals with Morgan Klein and McKenna Strong each adding a goal.

Jayda Helget and Wiltscheck each had two assists with Cowing, Klein, Elle Cooper, Strong and Alexa Steffl each adding a helper.

New Ulm goalie Cassie Reed played just the first period and did not face as shot. Jayden Kasiska-Pettersen stopped seven shots in her two periods in goal for the Eagles.

Fairmont goalie Rachel O’Connor had 38 saves in the game.

New Ulm outshot Fairmont 48-7 in the game.

“Our team came out with energy tonight,” New Ulm coach Kristin Faber said. “We controlled the puck and we had good energy from everyone. We have not seen our lines move like this from top to bottom in quite a while.”

Earlier in the season, New Ulm struggled to beat Fairmont 4-1.

“That was one of our worst games of our season,” Faber said.

New Ulm would leave little doubt from the get-go about who the winner of this game was going to be. Goals from Wiltscheck, Cowing, Strong and Scheid — with Wiltscheck and Scheid’s coming on the power play — had the Eagles up 4-0 as New Ulm fired 22 shots on O’Connor and did not allow Fairmont a shot on net.

It also allowed Faber to insert Kasiska-Pettersen in goal after the first 17 minutes.

“She had not had a ton of playing time,” Faber said. “She had an injury earlier in the year and being Senior Night it was good to get everyone in.”

New Ulm added five goals in the second period on two goals each from Scheid and Wiltscheck which were sandwiched around a Cowing goal for a 9-0 lead after two periods.

Klein’s goal at the 11:50 mark of the third period closed out the scoring.

“Most of our goals had assists tonight,” Faber said. “We had talked about playing a team game. We do not have players who are going to skate the puck end to end. It is going to have to be a group of five moving through all three zones.”
