NICOLLET — Too many early turnovers made it tough for the New Ulm Cathedral girls’ basketball team to complete a comeback on Thursday afternoon against Cleveland in Day 1 basketball action of the Nicollet Holiday Invitational.

As a result, the Clippers went on to win 56-41, dropping the Greyhounds to 2-7 on the season.

The Greyhounds got a pair of early 3s by Heidi Hoffman to jump out to a 6-1 lead early on in Thursday’s contest, but the Clippers stormed back, turning several Cathedral turnovers into points in transition. A pair of free throws by Katelyn McCabe gave the Clippers their first double-digit lead of the day, 20-9, with less than seven minutes to play in the opening half.

Hoffman hit another 3 to bring the Greyhounds back within single digits soon after, but Cleveland took its double-digit lead back after a bucket inside by Karna Ziebarth, who led the Clippers with 25 points on the day. The Greyhounds battled back to cut the deficit to a manageable 30-24 Clipper lead at the half after a 3 by Lauryn Franta.

Sarah Mohr started the second half out with a putback bucket inside to have the Greyhounds trailing just 30-26, but that was as close as Cathedral would get from there out as the Clippers took back a double-digit lead shortly after and led by as much as 17.

Hoffman led the Greyhounds with 12 points and three rebounds, while Mohr added 10 points and three rebounds and McKenna Miling had 9 points.

Cathedral takes on Nicollet on Day 2 of the invitational at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
