NEW ULM — Jake Ford’s power-play goal with just 21 seconds left in the game broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the New Ulm Steel to a 3-2 win over the West Division-leading Granite City Saturday night at the New Ulm Civic Center in an NA3HL game.

Keegan Bauman and Jordan Cooper also had goals for the Steel (9-10-0-1).

Sam Ayd, Jarrett Cammarata and Jacob Halvorson each had an assist.

Steel goalie Henry Baribeau stopped 23 of 25 shots.

Steel coach Andrew Kolb said that on the game-wining power-play goal, he told his team that they needed to get possession of the puck off of the face-off. “We did not draw up anything special,” he said. “We got possession and were able to make a play at the net and get a dirty goal in front of the net.”

New Ulm had to come from behind as they trailed 1-0 early when Trevor Dummer got the first of his two goals at the 1:32 mark of the first period.

But the Steel knotted the game at the 2:59 mark when the Lumberjacks turned the puck over at center ice and Bauman skated in all alone and beat Granite City goalie Bryce Crowley for his eighth goal of the year.

With the Steel on the power play in the second period, Jordan Cooper’s bad angle shot found the corner of the net for a 2-1 lead for Cooper’s seventh goal of the year.

Dummer’s second goal of the game for Granite City tied the game at 2 at the 12:51 mark, setting the stage for Ford’s late game-winner.

It was his fourth goal of the season.

Kolb said that the Steel are a different team when they skate.

“We competed tonight and everybody came ready to play,” he said. “This was probably our first 60-minute game of the entire season. This was a huge win going into Granite (Sunday).”

The Steel now travel to Granite City for a 7:30 p.m. game on Sunday.
