SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye girls’ basketball team held off Cleveland on Friday night in the opener of the St. Mary’s Invitational at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s High School, winning 68-58 to start the season 1-0.

Madi Krueger led the Indians with 19 points, six steals, five assists and eight rebounds, while Leslie Flores added 10 points and seven rebounds. Also for Sleepy Eye, Macy Schenk added 11 points and five rebounds, while Brooklyn Moldan had 9 points, six rebounds and five blocks.

Sleepy Eye led 39-21 at the half.

Cleveland was led by Julia McCabe with 15 points.

Sleepy Eye plays at 4 p.m. Saturday against Central MN. Christian in Day 2 of the St. Mary’s Invitational in Sleepy Eye, while Cleveland (0-1) plays Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 2 p.m. Saturday.

St. Mary’s 75,

Central MN. Christian 41

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s closed Day 1 of the St. Mary’s Invitational with a dominant 75-41 win over Central MN. Christian on Friday night at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s High School.

Leading the way for the Knights (1-0) was freshman Madison Mathiowetz, who had a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds. She also added four assists and five steals for the Knights.

Also for St. Mary’s, Sydney Windschitl scored 15 points and added three assists and three steals, while Cassie Heinrichs added 15 points.

The Knights host Cleveland at 2 p.m. Saturday on Day 2 of the St. Mary’s Invitational.

Henry Sibley 3,

New Ulm 2, Shootout

ST. PAUL — New Ulm fell to Henry Sibley 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night in the St. Paul Tournament.

It will go down in the record books as a tie for New Ulm, but tournament rules required the shootout for a winner.

Jack Raymond had 41 saves for New Ulm, while Glavine Schugel and Braxten Hoffman added a goal each. Hoffman’s goal was his first on varsity.

New Ulm recorded 48 shots on goal and play again at 6 p.m. Saturday as the tournament continues.
