Eagles defeat Luverne

NEW ULM — Molly Scheid scored two goals as the New Ulm Eagles girls’ hockey team opened up their Big South Conference play with a 4-1 win over Luverne.

Madeline Gag and Alexa Steffl each added goals.

Gag also added two assists with Ally Steffensmeier and Ashtyn Wiltscheck each getting a helper.

New Ulm goalie Cassie Reed recorded 12 saves as New Ulm dominated the Cardinals in shots outshooting Luverne 41-13.

“Luverne is always a rivalry game for us,” New Ulm coach Kristin Faber said. “We did a nice job tonight killing penalties especially when we were down two skaters in the third period. And we put four goals in the net tonight.”

Gag got the Eagles on the board at 5:04 of the first period when she stuffed the puck by Luverne goalie Mallory Von Tesch.

Steffl’s goal at the 54-second mark of period two upped the lead to 2-0 before the Cardinals’ Brynn Thier cut the New Ulm lead to 2-1 on a power play goal.

But Scheid’s two third-period goals coming three minutes apart in the third period sealed the win.
