MLC volleyball team gets swept, soccer teams lose to Viterbo

ST. PAUL — The Martin Luther College volleyball team closed the first half of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference schedule with a pair of losses at a triangular hosted by University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Wednesday.

The Knights lost the first match 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 30-28) to UW-Superior before dropping the second match 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-15) to UNWSP.

UWS 3, MLC 0

A slow start to the match proved costly in a 3-0 defeat to UW-Superior to open the day.

MLC fell behind big in each of the first two sets to create a 2-0 deficit heading into the third set. The Knights played well in the final set and held several chances to extend the match into a fourth game, but the Yellowjackets came back to finish off the sweep.

Kati Aguilar led the Knights with eight kills. Jewel St. Germaine recorded 18 assists and six digs, while Camryn Biebert led the team with three service aces.

UNWSP 3, MLC 0

The Knights were unable to slow down the defending champions from Northwestern-St. Paul in a 3-0 loss in the second match.

Aguilar led the Knights in kills (12), digs (13) and blocks (two). St. Germaine added 13 assists and 10 digs.

Men’s soccer

LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team was unable to hold onto an early two-goal lead in a 4-2 loss at Viterbo on Wednesday.

Joe Graumann opened the scoring in the ninth minute with his fifth goal of the season, and Joel Koelpin pushed the MLC lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute following his second of the season. Hugo Ugalde-Bemer assisted on both MLC goals.

The V-Hawks answered with a goal in the 28th minute to cut the MLC lead to 2-1 going into halftime, and then found the equalizer in the 51st minute to tie the game 2-2.

Shortly after Viterbo tied the game, the V-Hawks took the lead with a goal in the 59th minute, and then added an insurance tally in the 81st minute to put the game away.

MLC fell to 2-5-2 on the season with the loss.

Women’s soccer

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Martin Luther College women’s soccer team was unable to generate anything on the offensive end in a 4-0 loss at Viterbo University on Wednesday.

The V-Hawks jumped in front early, scoring in the 18th minute and then adding a second goal in the 23rd minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The second half brought more of the same, as the V-Hawks scored two goals in the first three minutes out of the break to build the lead to the final four-goal margin.

The Knights were held to only two shots, with Emily Witkowski and Lydia Bitter each recording one.

In goal, Mollie Fischer stopped 14 of the 18 Viterbo shots on goal.

MLC fell to 1-8 on the season in defeat.
