Steel to hold tryouts Aug. 11

NEW ULM — In just 10 days, the New Ulm Steel will hold their annual tryout camp at the New Ulm Civic Center.

The tryout camp will he held on Saturday, August 11. It begins at noon and will take place again at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 12.

“For the camp we are going to have a wide range of players coming in,” General Manager Bryant Black said. “We have players coming in from all over the country and we also have players coming in from Latvia, Ireland, Russia along with a mix of players from Minnesota and Wisconsin. We are still working on a player from Pittsburgh. It is going to be a different range of players on the team this year.

“We are going to have a little bit of a new look team as we will be reloading on the defensive end,” Black said. “We are not sure if we will return any defensemen from last year. We may have a whole new defensive corp but we are still talking to players who would like to be part of the team again.”

Black also said that a good chunk of the Steel’s recent draft picks will also be here.

“There are a few of them that will go elsewhere. A lot will change in the next month and we will get more definitive answers as the season approaches.”

Black did say that Jarrett Cammarata, Jack Parks, Hunter Johnson and Michael Smits will be back from last year.

“Trevor Woytcke is on the fence about returning and we would love to have him back,” Black said.

Black did say that Ryan Kenny, who was the starter in goal for the majority of the games last year for the Steel, will not be back.

“His whole family moved out to New Jersey,” Black said. “But we have Drew Schenkenberg back and a goalie that we drafted in James Royce [from Simley High School] that we are very excited about. He almost made Chippewa Falls (Tier II team) and he is going to be a solid goalie for us.”

And Chippewa Falls may become a familiar destination to fans here in New Ulm this coming hockey season as the Steel will shuffle players back and forth from the Tier II team to the Tier III team here in New Ulm.

The Steel also released their schedule for the coming season and they now have North Iowa in the West Division with them. The Steel will also play new teams at home in Coulee Region on October 26th and the Evansville Indiana Jr. Thunderbirds on November 2 and 3.

The Steel open on the road on September 15 at Breezy Point before hosting Breezy Point for the home opener on September 22.

Black said that the Steel will be wearing pink jerseys in the month of October for cancer awareness.

He also said that there is a need for host families with more players coming in from different areas.

If you are interested in being a host family you can contact Black at 320-760-3030 or Nicole Anderson at 507-276-7188.
