Big 1st inning lifts Excelsior past VFW Silver

NEW ULM — Excelsior scored 12 runs in the top of the first inning as it defeated New Ulm VFW Silver 19-6 in six innings in the opening game of the Junior Upper Midwest Classic on Thursday at Johnson Park.

Excelsior’s Thomas Gross had eight RBIs, including a grand slam and six RBIs in the first inning. He came to the plate three times with the bases loaded in the first two innings and he delivered all eight RBIs in that two-inning stretch.

New Ulm scored a couple of runs in the third inning, then scored four more runs in the fifth inning.

Isaiah Miller took the loss for New Ulm. He went the first inning and gave up 12 runs on nine hits.

Evan Arndt pitched four innings to pick up the win for Excelsior. He gave up two runs on two hits.

Excelsior’s bats were alive right away in the first. Gross connected on a grand slam to put his team up 5-0 with nobody out. He later came to bat with the bases loaded and two outs and he delivered a two-run single to make it 10-0.

Up 12-0, Excelsior scored three more runs in the second inning and Gross again came up with the big hit, this time with a two-run double. Excelsior led 15-0 after two innings, but Silver got two runs back in the third inning after Cade Bushard delivered a two-out RBI single that scored Riley Prochniak. Sam Keckeisen then drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mitch Ulrich, making it 15-2.

In the fifth, Silver scored four times. Bushard drove in his second run of the game with another hit to make it 15-3 and a throwing error later in the error scored three New Ulm runs. Bushard finished the game 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Uhlrich also scored two runs for New Ulm.

Excelsior tacked on four runs in the sixth inning for the final 19-6 margin.

New Ulm Silver plays Sleepy Eye at 11 a.m. on Friday at Mueller Park and Wayzata at 4:30 p.m. later in the day at Johnson Park.
