Marti’s long career with Sonics comes to an end

NEW ULM — Missy-Mack Marti has been the dance coach of the New Ulm Cathedral Sonics for the past 16 years.

This past weekend, New Ulm Cathedral chose not to renew Marti’s contract, thus ending her long run with the Sonics.

The decision was made after Marti received an email with an ultimatum in order to keep her job. She would either have to change her living arrangements so she’s not living with her fiancé, or have a proof of marriage certificate by June 15.

Marti, who is not Catholic and lives with her fiancé and son, addressed the decision and also a hashtag in her defense of the decision on her Facebook page on June 3.

“What’s #fightformissy?” Marti writes. “After a month long battle of fighting for what I believe in, something that was a huge part of my life for the past 16 years was taken away — The Sonics Dance Team Family. My contract was not renewed for next season because of my ‘living situation’.

“I am heartbroken and trying to understand why this has become an issue after so long,” Marti continues. “I want to thank everyone for all the emails, messages, calls, visits, etc. The support and love I have gotten in the past 2 days has been unreal. My assistant Coach Heidi Schwab, my dancers and parents are some of the greatest people I know, and their support is AMAZING!”

Letters were sent out to parents explaining the decision. Meanwhile, several past and present Sonics dance team members, friends and fans continue to share positive messages with Marti.

Marti’s Facebook post on the decision has almost 200 reactions and over 135 comments showing support as of Wednesday.
