NEW ULM — How dominant was New Ulm Cathedral’s Aaron Portner in the Greyhounds’ Section 2A tournament win over Nicollet Thursday?

Of the 15 outs recorded by Cathedral, 12 were courtesy of Portner strikeouts as the Greyhounds pounded out 15 hits in a 12-0 win at Mueller Park.

The game was stooped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run lead rule.

Portner allowed just two hits to the Raiders — a second-inning base hit to Shane Stevenson and a fifth-inning blooper to Eric Fischer.

Portner walked three.

Ean Thomson took the season-ending loss for the Raiders who finish at 4-11. He went the distance.

Josh Seidl and Mark Schommer each had three hits for the Greyhounds. Nate Hauser and Zach Helget each had two hits as every starter for the Greyhounds had at least one hit.

Portner had a double with Hauser and Seidl each adding a triple.

Hauser drove in three runs with Seidl and Alex Hillesheim each driving in two runs.

Cathedral now faces the winner of the Mankato Loyola and Minnesota Valley Lutheran game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in New Ulm.

“Aaron did a very nice job today,” Cathedral head baseball coach Bob Weier said. “He was around the strike zone and was ahead of most of the hitters and did a nice job finishing off a lot of hitters. And we did what we had to do today. We got a lead early and took away any doubt who was going to win.”

Cathedral scored two runs off of the right-handed Thomsen in the first inning. Seidl and Schommer each singled. A fielder’s choice and a double steal made it 1-0 before Portner drove in the second run with a double.

The Greyhounds pushed five more runs across in the second inning. Tony Geiger singled and was sacrificed to second by Helget. Will Schabert coaxed a walk before a Hauser single scored Geiger. Seidl’s triple to right field made it 5-0.

A Schommer infield single and a Portner fly out and ensuing throwing error made it 7-0 after two innings.

Meanwhile, Portner was striking out Raiders’ hitters as he recorded the first eight of nine outs in the game by the strikeout.

Cathedral added two more runs in the third on an error and a Schommer bloop single.

The Greyhounds scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth after two were out. A Schabert RBI single and Hauser’s two-run triple put a ribbon on the game.

“We kept adding runs each inning,” Weier said. “We had no errors.”

The only groundout in the game came on the first batter of the game when Thomsen grounded back to Portner.

The other outs came when Riley Hulke walked in the third and was out trying to steal and in the fifth when Stevenson popped out to Seidl on a foul fly.
