Schommer shuts down Cleveland

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Cathedral baseball team is on a roll.

Mark Schommer allowed just two hits in his four innings on the mound and Cathedral used two big innings as it won its seventh straight game, blasting Cleveland 12-0 Monday in a nonconference game at Mueller Park.

The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Schommer fanned three in his time on the mound and did not allow a walk. He also forced seven ground-ball outs.

Aaron Portner pitched the top of the fifth and struck out all three batters he faced.

Carter Kopat took the loss for the Clippers (6-6). He was charged with six runs in his three innings of work.

Schommer also led the Greyhounds’ offense with two hits, including a two-run double in the fourth inning.

Alex Hillesheim and Portner each had a double. Sam Knowles drove in two runs.

“We played a very nice baseball game today,” New Ulm Cathedral head baseball coach Bob Weier said. “And that started with our pitcher. He threw strikes and he got ahead of the majority of their hitters. Defensively we made outs out of outs.”

Weier added that the Greyhounds, who ended their regular season at 12-3, had some nice at-bats offensively.

“We used some of the small-ball stuff early in the game to move some runner over,” he said. “Once we got the lead we had hitters who were intelligent about their at-bats. They swung the bat based on the count.”

And then you throw in Schommer’s continued dominance on the mound. “He has given up four hits in three games,” Weier said.

Cathedral scored a run in the first inning when Josh Seidl singled and stole second — one of six steals of second in the game — and took third on a passed ball. A wild pitch brought Seidl home.

Tony Geiger’s lead-off walk in the second sparked a four run inning. A wild pitch and a Zach Helget sacrifice bunt placed him at third. He scored on Nate Hauser’s infield single.

Hauser stole second and Seidl was safe on an infield error.

Schommer followed with a two-run double for a 4-0 lead.

Hillesheim’s double upped the lead to 5-0.

The Greyhounds added a run in the third without the aid of a hit. Knowles walked and came around to score on a groundout and a wild pitch.

Cathedral salted the game away witha six run fourth. Hauser walked and swiped second. A Schommer infield single and a walk to Hauser loaded the bases. Another wild pitch scored a run before a two-run double from Portner made it a 9-0 game.

Knowles continued the inning with a base hit Helget and Will Schabert were each hit by a pitch for an 10-0 lead.

Two more runs scored on consecutive passed balls.

The Greyhounds now wait for the Section 2A seedings on Wednesday to determine their playoff fate.

“Unless things really go crazy, we should be a three or four seed and have a home game Thursday,” Weier said.
