SPRINGFIELD — Springfield swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in a doubleheader on Monday.

In the first game, Hunter Mathiowetz went the distance for the win. He allowed one earned run and struck out seven in six innings.

David Herrera took the loss for the Thunderbirds. He gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.

Offensively for Springfield, Decker Scheffler and Tanner Vogel were each 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Ivan Hovland was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Mason Rummel was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Henry Scheitel was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

In the second game, Mitchell Leonard earned the win. He allowed five runs in two innings

Zach Weber took the loss, allowing seven runs in 2/3 innings.

Isaac Fink was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs for the Tigers.

Kyle Huiras was 2 for 3 for GFW.

Sleepy Eye 2, Cathedral 1, 10 inn.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye swept New Ulm Cathedral in a doubleheader on Monday.

Avery Stevens earned the win. He pitched three innings in relief of Jacob Berg, who pitched the first seven innings.

Aaron Portner took the loss for the Greyhounds. He went 1 1/3 innings and allowed one hit.

Stevens was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Indians and Berg had the game-winning RBI.

Nate Hauser was 2 for 5 and Alex Hillesheim was 1 for 5 with an RBI for the Greyhounds.

In Game 2, Kyle Domeier went the distance to get the win. He struck out two and walked two.

Portner took the loss, allowing one run on three hits in one inning.

Berg was 2 for 2 with three RBIs in the second game and Stevens was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Mark Schommer was 1 for 2 for the Greyhounds.

Sleepy Eye (6-3) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday and Cathedral hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a doubleheader on Thursday.

MCW 11, Madelia 8

MARTIN COUNTY — Martin County West defeated Madelia 11-8 on Monday in a Valley conference baseball game.

Leading batters for Madelia were Logan Anderson who went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Isaac Arduser who went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Madelia (1-7, 1-5) plays at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Nicollet.

Prep softball

New Ulm 5, St. Peter 2

ST. PETER — New Ulm’s Ashlyn Donner struck out 13 in seven innings and gave up two hits as the Eagles remained perfect on the season with a Big South Conference win.

Joey Batt was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Kaila Brudelie was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a double. Ashley Mehlhop scored two runs. New Ulm (7-0) is at Worthington on Tuesday for a doubleheader.

GFW 14, Springfield 9

Springfield 6, GFW 5

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop split a softball doubleheader with Springfield on Tuesday.

Hanna Schroeder earned the win in the first game and Sarah Dunn took the loss. Katelynn Firle went 4 for 4 and Schroepfer was 3 for 4 for the Thunderbirds.

Mia Mickelson was 1 for 1 for the Tigers.

In Game 2, Brittany Rogotzke earned the win and Schroeder took the loss.

Jaden Nachreiner was 2 for 2 for the Thunderbirds and Taylor Augustin was 1 for 1 for the Tigers.

GFW (1-7) hosts Sibley East in a nonconference game on Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 26, MVL 0

St. Mary’s 37, MVL 5

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Minnesota Valley in prep softball action.

For St. Mary’s, Jody Hansen was 4 for 4 in the first game with eight RBIs. Ali Beltz was 3 for 3. St. Mary’s scored nine runs in the first inning and 14 in the second.

In Game 2, the Knights scored 24 runs in the first inning.

Wabasso 15, RRC 0

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Red Rock Central 15-0 on Monday in a nonconference softball game.

Emily Benz pitched a no hitter for Wabasso.

Wabasso’s leading hitters were Madeline Hanna who went 2 for 2 with two walks and two RBIs and Cora Eichten who had a double and three RBIs.

Wabasso (6-5) plays a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Springfield. RRC plays at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Edgerton.

Boys’ tennis

Mankato West 5,

New Ulm 2

MANKATO — Mankato West defeated New Ulm 5-2 in nonconference boys’ tennis action on Monday.

Andrew Goodall won 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Colton Collum lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Isaac Blumhoefer won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Max Gieseke lost 6-4, 2-6, 10-2 at No. 4 singles.

West swept the doubles competition. New Ulm hosts Worthington on Tuesday in a Big South Conference match.

Boys’ golf

ST. PETER — St. Peter defeated New Ulm in a Big South Conference boys’ golf meet on Tuesday.

Glavine Schugel led the Eagles with a 36 and Cade Horner led the Saints with a 37.

Girls’ golf

New Ulm 191,

St. Peter 194

ST. PETER — New Ulm defeated St. Peter 191-194 on Monday in a Big South conference girls’ golf meet.

New Ulm was led by Abbey Frauenholtz who shot a 43, Izzie Wolkow and Paige Jacobs who both shot a 49 and Lucy Sletta who shot a 50.

New Ulm plays at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Waseca. St. Peter hosts Fairmont at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
