Greyhounds sweep Tigers in softball season opener
NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral swept Springfield 5-1 and 20-1 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference doubleheader softball action.
In Game 1, Cathedral got on the board when Sarah Mohr walked and later scored to give Cathedral a 1-0 lead.
For the Tigers, Mya Mickelson cracked a lead-off double in the second inning. Brittany Rogotzke’s double scored Mickelson to tie the game.
Mohr singled in the third inning and scored later on an error giving Cathedral a 2-1 advantage. Rose Hazuka belted a two-run home run to right field scoring Josie Pautzke boosting the Greyhounds’ lead to 4-1.
Abby Beranek hit a double and she scored later on Jenna Helget’s single for an insurance run.
Pautzke earned the win in the first game, pitching seven innings, giving up one run on three hits. She walked one batter and struck out seven. Rogotzke took the loss in Game 1.
Hazuka was 2 for 3 with the two-run home run in the first game.
“Josie [Pautzke] and Rose [Hazuka] did a good job pitching and catching,” Cathedral head coach Bob Mertz said.
Springfield head coach Katie Wilhemi said she was pleased with her team’s improvement from its previous game.
Pautzke won Game 2, going four innings, giving up one run, three hits and striking out five batters. Brittany Rogotzke took the loss.
Mohr was 3 for 5 with a double and Hazuka was 3 for 3 with a home run for the Greyhounds in the second game.
Springfield will play at Murray County Central on Friday. Cathedral (2-0) will travel to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday.
