Bethany sweeps MLC in UMAC softball action

AUSTIN — The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games of its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran College at the Packer Dome on Thursday morning by the scores of 9-0 (five innings) and 4-3.

BLC 9, MLC 0 (5 innings)

The Vikings opened the day with a 9-0 win in five innings.

The Knights allowed a pair of runs in the first two innings, and then were unable to slow the BLC bats as the Vikings batted around in the fourth frame for seven more runs.

MLC threatened in the first two innings thanks to doubles by Erika Rosenbaum and Samantha Schoch, but the Knights were unable to bring them in to score against BLC pitcher Anna Pipenhagen.

Morgan Palubick (2-5) took the loss for MLC after allowing six runs (four earned) in 3 1/3 innings.

BLC 4, MLC 3

MLC was unable to hold on to a three-run lead in the seventh inning as the Vikings came from behind to secure the sweep with a 4-3 win.

Rebecca Pruss (1-6) was dominant to start, holding BLC hitless through four innings. The MLC offense gave her a lead in the third inning as Kayla Rosenbaum singled home Audrey Timm, and then Samantha Schoch hit a two-out, two run double to give MLC a 3-0 lead.

The Knights held that three-run lead into the seventh, but struggled make defensive plays behind Pruss as the Vikings rallied to score four runs on three hits and two errors. Aimee Ashman reached third base with zero outs in the bottom half of the inning, but wasn’t able to score the tying run.

Pruss went the distance and took the loss for MLC, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in seven innings.

MLC fell to 3-11 on the season and 2-4 in UMAC play in defeat. BLC improved to 10-14 overall and 5-3 in UMAC play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Northwestern for a doubleheader.

Women’s tennis

MLC wins 8-1 against UMM

OWATONNA — The Martin Luther College women’s tennis team secured a non-conference win over Minnesota Morris by the score of 8-1 at Owatonna Tennis Center on Thursday.

The Knights swept the three doubles matches by the scores of 8-3, 8-2 and 8-3. The top team of Anna Hemmelman and Rachel Riediger led the way, followed by the number two team of Rachel Schewe and Morgan Shevey and the number three team of Ella Loersch and Jessica Stibb.

Hemmelman and Riediger also added singles wins at the top of the singles order. Shevey, Loersch and Stibb scored the other three singles wins in the 4-6 spots in the order.

The Knights improved to 4-6 with the win. UMM fell to 2-5 in defeat.

MLC will return to action on Saturday when it plays both St. Scholastica and Bethany Lutheran in a doubleheader at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville.

Men’s tennis

Knights top UMM 8-1

OWATONNA — The Martin Luther College men’s tennis team defeated Minnesota Morris 8-1 in a non-conference match on Thursday at Owatonna Tennis Center.

The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a sweep in doubles. The top team of Justin Steinke and Ethan Schultz earned an 8-4 win, while the number two team of Josh Koelpin and Joel Koelpin won 8-3. Nicolas Gartner and Josh Schroeder rounded out the sweep with an 8-1 win in the number three match.

MLC secured the team win by winning five of the six singles matches. Josh and Joel Koelpin, Schultz, Gartner and Schroeder each won in straight sets to score the five points.

The Knights improved to 4-5 on the season with the win, while UMM fell to 1-6 in defeat.

MLC will return to action on Saturday when it plays both St. Scholastica and Bethany Lutheran in a doubleheader at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville.
