Steel blanks Blizzard to win series

SLEEPY EYE — Zach Heiser scored two goals and Steel goalie Ryan Kenny stopped all 39 Alexandria shots as New Ulm downed the Blizzard 5-0 Sunday afternoon in Sleepy Eye to win the best-of-3 series play-off series 2 games to 1.

Luc Kreuser, Oliver Hoeschen and Jimmy Miller scored the other goals for New Ulm.

The Steel now face Granite City in a best-of-3 series beginning Friday in Sauk Rapids at 7:10. Saturday’s game is in Sleepy Eye at 7:10 with the third game, if necessary, back in Sauk Rapids on Sunday.

The winner of that series advances to the Fraser Cup in Chicago.

The Steel jumped on the Blizzard for a 1-0 lead when Hoeschen scored at the13:35 mark.

Kreuser’s goal on a rebound gave New Ulm a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.

New Ulm scored three goals in a span of just over three minutes in the second period, two coming on Heiser goals just over 2 minutes apart before Jimmy Miller made it 5-0 at the 9:48 mark.

The win was New Ulm’s second straight after losing 6-2 to Alexandria in the first game.
