St. Clair downs Tigers

ST. PETER — No. 1-seeded St. Clair defeated Springfield 66-33 in the girls’ basketball Section 2A, South Subsection finals game Tuesday night at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Springfield (12-17) struggled to put points on the board in the second half against a solid St. Clair (19-10) defense. The Cyclones held the Tigers to 13 points in the second half, while also controlling the boards to keep the pressure against the Tigers.

The Tigers played their way out of a 9-2 deficit early in the first half with shooting inside to keep the Cyclones from pulling away.

With 10:32 left in the first half, the Tigers’ Sydney Hauger hit a long 3-pointer from the left center of the arc as the Tigers tried to close the gap.

St. Clair, in the following minutes, went on a 7-3 scoring run to earn a double-digit lead against the Tigers with 6:58 still left to play in the first half.

The Cyclones began to control the game in the early minutes of the second half, putting up a 12-1 scoring run against the Tigers, with 3-point shooting from way out.

Hauger led the Tigers with 10 points, adding two rebounds, while Taylor Augustin netted 5 points and Samantha Richert and Anna Plotz added 4 points each.

St. Clair will face Sleepy Eye for the section final at 6 p.m. on Friday at Minnesota State Mankato.
