NEW ULM — It wasn’t pretty, but the New Ulm Cathedral girls’ basketball team picked up their first win of the year against Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity.

The Greyhounds survived a late comeback by the Bulldogs and won 39-34 in a nonconference battle. The Greyhounds (1-6) ended their six-game losing streak in the process.

Rose Hazuka and Jenna Helget led the Greyhounds with 9 points each.

Kayla Weinzeriel led LP/HT with a game-high 14 points.

The Bulldogs, who trailed 31-23 midway through the second half, staged a late comeback thanks in part to some Cathedral turnovers.

The Bulldogs, who trailed 22-15 at halftime, went on a 6-0 run to cut Cathedral’s lead to 31-29 with 3:30 left in the game.

Hazuka answered the Bulldogs’ basket with a basket of her own to make it 33-29, but LP/HT’s Myranda Hentges cut the deficit again when she hit a pair of free throws with 2:55 left in the game to make it 33-31.

Hentges then tied the game at 33 with 1:30 left, but McKenna Miling drove the lane and scored with 30.4 seconds left to make it 35-33. She later hit a pair of free throws and Lauren Franta hit the final free throws for Cathedral as it hung on for the win.

Cathedral hosts Sibley East Thursday.
