NEW ULM — Hunter Ranweiler and Lane Miller picked up big victories by pin on Thursday night, but the New Ulm Wrestling team failed to knock off Blue Earth Area in Big South Conference wrestling action.

BEA (3-4, 1-0) defeated New Ulm (0-3, 0-2) 57-18.

Ranweiler, the No. 3-ranked wrestler in AA at 145 pounds, picked up his fall victory at 3:45 into the match. Ranweiler looked solid through most of the match and was up 5-0 after a reversal and a near fall before the fall.

Miller picked up his fall victory over Akeira Morrow at 4:29 into the match after leading 6-3. Sean Howk, No. 10 at 138, received a forfeit victory for New Ulm at 145.

“I was impressed by Lane Miller’s match tonight,” New Ulm coach John Rieser said. “Two kids that kind of went at it, and he kind of fought and battled through and came out on top in that match, so that was a good match to see. Hunter’s win, he started out a little slow but kind of gained momentum at the end and got the fall for us. That’s what we’re looking for.”

In what could have been one of the top matches of the night at 160 pounds, the match was unfortunately cut short due to an injury. Tanner Stark, No. 4-ranked AA wrestler at 152, lost to Zach Buseman, No. 6-ranked A wrestler at 170, by injury default at 1:13 into the very first period.

After Buseman picked up 3 points by near fall, Stark was left on the mat injured as the match was halted.

“It was a tough move,” Rieser said. “He [Stark] got his shoulder stretched out a little bit, so we’ll evaluate tomorrow and see how he is.

“That was obviously a big one,” Rieser said of the Stark-Buseman matchup. “Two state-ranked kids, so I hate to see it end that way, but it’s early in the year. We’ll get him healthy and get him back.”
