New Ulm Steel pick up 1st win of the season

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Steel broke a 2-2 tie in the third period with three goals and came away with their first win — and first year head coach Andrew Kolb’s first career coaching win — with a 5-2 win over Alexandria Friday night at the New Ulm Civic Center in an NA3HL game.

Ryan Smith scored twice with Jack Parks, Alex Nagel and Tom Reilly scoring goals. Jimmy Miller, Luc Kreuser, Trevor Woytke, Stephen Mordini, Brandon Mehlhop and Kirk Coppock each had assists.

New Ulm goalie Ryan Beilenberg recorded 25 saves.

The Steel had taken a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals from Smith and Parks. But New Ulm lost that lead in the second period when the Blizzard scored twice in a span of less than two minutes.

It was also a period that saw the Steel fail to score on a 5-on-3 power play and then give up those two scores — one of them coming when New Ulm was on the power play.

“I did not talk to the team between the second and third period,” Kolb said. “It seems like that is our thing right now to give up leads, I did not talk to them — I just discussed some things with (assistant coach) Nick Campbell. We let our veteran leadership take over in the locker room situation. Was not happy with not scoring on the 5-on-3.”

But the Steel got goals from Smith, Nagel and Reilly — Reilly’s coming on a power play with less than two minutes left in the game — to secure the win.
