Big 2nd quarter lifts Greyhounds past Rebels
NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral got a solid all-around game on both sides of the ball as it defeated previously unbeaten Murray County Central 19-6 at Johnson Field on Saturday in Southwest District, East Subdistrict football.
Cathedral’s rushing attack was too much for the Rebels to handle as Cathedral improved to 3-1 on the year.
“I think we did a really nice job, Murray County’s got some really nice ball players and they were playing a nine-man front, they were coming up with their safeties,” Cathedral coach Denny Lux said. “The best thing was we didn’t put the ball on the ground.”
The Greyhounds scored all 19 of their points in the second quarter thanks in part to two rushing touchdowns from Colton Braulick. They took advantage of a late turnover by MCC that led to Braulick’s second touchdown of the quarter.
After a scoreless first quarter, Cathedral got a 22-yard touchdown pass from Josh Seidl to John Gillis with 9:42 left in the second quarter for Cathedral’s first touchdown of the game.
Braulick scored on a 15-yard run with 1:11 to go in the half, then the Greyhounds recovered an MCC fumble and scored three plays later to make it 19-0 after the PAT.
The Rebels scored in the third quarter on a 4-yard touchdown pass to Justin Benda to make it 19-6.
Braulick led the Cathedral rushing attack with 25 carries for 137 yards and two scores. David Berg had 50 yards rushing on 12 carries and Nathan Hauser had 43 yards rushing on eight carries. Mark Schommer finished with 41 yards on the ground on eight carries.
“They’re a very solid team and they have some good running backs and they do a good job spreading the ball around,” Cathedral defensive coach Jesse Nosbush said. “We just made a few adjustments in practice where we had to bring extra guys up.”
Cathedral is at Adrian on Friday.
