Prep roundup: Wabasso sweeps Springfield, New Ulm boys’ soccer defeats Waseca

Wabasso 3, Springfield 0

WABASSO — Wabasso swept Springfield 25-9, 25-6, 25-11 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Jenna Frank had 36 set assists and 16 kills for the Rabbits. Gina Goblirsch added 11 kills. Megan Guetter and Morgan Rothmeier each had 10 digs.

Brittney Rogotzke led Springfield with 11 digs, Brandi Platz added five digs and Arynzi Rabb had three set assists.

Springfield (0-12, 0-4) will participate in the Sibley East Invitational Tournament on Saturday in Arlington.

Wabasso (14-2, 4-0) will play in the Minnesota Showcase in Burnsville on Friday and Saturday.

Cleveland 3, Madelia 1

MADELIA — Cleveland defeated Madelia 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Madelia was led by Stef Sotelo who had 12 kills and 19 digs. Also for Madelia, Alayna DeLaCruz had 12 kills and four digs, Lizzie Cooling had five kills, 12 digs and 49 set assists, and Carissa Caraway had 10 kills, three digs and a block.

Madelia (5-7, 2-2) plays at the St. James Invitational on Saturday. Cleveland hosts Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday.

Sibley East 3, LSH 2

ARLINGTON — Sibley East defeated Le Sueur-Henderson 20-25, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-9 on Thursday in a Minnesota River conference volleyball game.

Sibley East was led by Rachel Rettmann who had 18 kills, nine digs and seven blocks. Also for Sibley East, Taylor Brinkman had 25 set assists and 10 kills, and Morgan Stearns had 20 set assists and 12 kills.

Le Sueur-Henderson plays at the St. James tournament on Saturday. Sibley East (5-6, 1-1) hosts a tournament on Saturday.

CM/C 3, BLHS 0

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain/Comfrey swept Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Makenzie Kerkhoff led CM/C with 12 kills, two blocks and nine digs. Erica Bock added nine kills and 19 digs. Abby Jemmings had 25 set assists, six digs and one kill. Kylie Wersal added 16 digs.

CM/C (8-2, 2-1) will travel to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (5-6, 2-0) on Tuesday.

Waseca 3, New Ulm 0

WASECA — Waseca defeated New Ulm 25-17, 25-14, 25-13 on Thursday in a Big South Conference volleyball match.

Sarah Longtin had eight digs, Madeline Gag added six kills with two blocks, Izzie Wolkow had eight set assists and Nora Windschill had four kills.

New Ulm (0-9) will participate in the Sibley East Tournament on Saturday.

Boys’ soccer

New Ulm 3, Waseca 1

WASECA — New Ulm’s Wyatt Huard scored three goals as the Eagles defeated Waseca 3-1 Thursday in Big South Conference boys’ soccer action.

Huard’s first goal was unassisted with 8:51 left in the first half. He then scored his second goal off of an assist from Matthew Messenger with 36:15 left in the second half and the third goal came on an assist from Jack Howard with 2:51 left in the second half.

Matthew Janke had 13 saves for the Eagles.

New Ulm (4-3-3) is at Jordan on Tuesday.

Prep Tennis

BEA 6, New Ulm 1

BLUE EARTH — The New Ulm girls’ tennis team lost 6-1 to Blue Earth Area on Thursday in Big South Conference play.

New Ulm’s only win on the day came when Kaila Brudelie and Bethany Janssen won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.

New Ulm hosts Belle Plaine on Monday.
