GAYLORD — New Ulm VFW Silver opened District 2, Southeast Subdistrict play with a 14-4, six-inning win against Sibley East on Monday at Walsh Field.

New Ulm scored five times in the third and its offense took off from there, finishing with nine hits and taking advantage of five Sibley East errors.

The excessive heat was tough for both teams but Silver finally relaxed in the third.

“I think we came out of the cage and got hot quick,” coach Matt Swanson said. “As soon as they settled in and got relaxed we made the plays.”

Matt Rieger pitched five innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits and three runs.

“It’s a big thing for all of our pitchers that they relax,” Swanson said. “If a call doesn’t go their way, just go get the next one and he recovered well.”

Sibley East scored the game’s first run when Carter Kistner drew a bases-loaded walk from Rieger, who walked five and hit another batter through the first two innings. However, Rieger caught a break when Ryan Wolverton grounded into a double play to end the threat.

Aaron Deis’ two-out RBI single put Sibley East ahead 2-0 in the third.

New Ulm took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third, the first run coming on an RBI single by Cole Backer. Backer later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Tony Geiger scored on a fielder’s choice to give New Ulm the lead.

New Ulm added to the lead with two outs and the bases loaded. Cade Bushard’s hard grounder to short was too much to handle for Deis, who missed the hop and allowed two more runs to score to make it 5-2.

Sibley East got one run back in the fourth on a single to right. Colten Harens scored from second, but Kistner was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Silver then scored twice more in the fourth thanks to a couple of errors to go up 7-3. New Ulm then put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Leading 10-4 in the sixth, New Ulm scored four times to end the game.

New Ulm plays Hutchinson at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in Arlington.
