NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 added to its winning streak by beating New Ulm Legion Blue 5-1 on Monday at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

Sleepy Eye (6-12), which began the season 1-8, has now won three-straight games and five of its last nine.

“We’ve been getting a lot better pitching,” Sleepy Eye coach John Mielke said. “We’ve just been giving away too many free passes early in the season — that was really just killing us, we were walking guys. I think our pitchers are pitching more confidently these last couple weeks.”

With the win, Sleepy Eye avenges its 6-5 eight-inning loss to Blue (1-15) on June 19.

Alex Woitas delivered a complete-game effort in getting the win for Post 7, having given up one unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Woitas made things difficult for New Ulm for the most part, yielding three of his five hits allowed in the final two innings.

“I’ve got to give him credit, he pitched a heck of a game,” New Ulm coach Ed Tietel said. “He went out there and pitched seven innings and kept us off balance.”

Woitas batted in Zach Haala for the first run of the game in the top of the first before New Ulm scored on back-to-back errors in the bottom half of the inning.

New Ulm could not get anything else going against Woitas, however, as Sleepy Eye went on to tack on runs throughout the game.

Haala finished with two RBIs and one run scored on a 2-for-2 performance at the plate, while Woitas was 2 for 3 with one RBI and one run scored. Ryley Hansen was 2 for 3 for New Ulm.

Luke Scheid got the loss in four innings of work. He gave up four runs, three earned on six hits with four walks and no strikeouts. Brendan Bieraugel pitched for two innings and gave up one earned run, while T.J. Sweere pitched for one inning and notched two strikeouts and one walk.
