New Ulm Legion Gold hangs 27 runs on Fairmont in doubleheader sweep

NEW ULM — After its disappointing early exit from the Upper Midwest Classic this past weekend, New Ulm Legion Gold returned to the field with purpose.

New Ulm Gold managed to score 27 runs on 24 hits in sweeping a doubleheader against Fairmont 17-5 in five innings and 10-3 on Monday at Mueller Park.

In the first game, Gold (12-6) had five different players with multiple hits in the 17-run stanza. This included a six-RBI performance from Hunter Ranweiler, who left the game after the second inning, having gone 2 for 2. Cole Wellmann also had three RBIs in going 2 for 2.

“We hit the ball real well,” New Ulm coach Jeremy Drexler said. “We had OK pitching — we had too many walks in the first game, got better pitching in the second game. But really we did a good job of hitting the ball and seeing pitches. We made them make plays and they didn’t make a lot of them.”

Fairmont had a sluggish effort in trying to record outs in both games as its pitching got chewed up by New Ulm’s bats.

“I don’t know, that’s their choice if they don’t want to show up and play hard and they enjoy getting their butts kicked,” Drexler said. “But I don’t mind scoring 27 runs in two games, so I’ve got no problem with that.”

Post 132 made things difficult in the first game right off the bat with a four-run first inning, which included a two-RBI single from Ranweiler before Nick Fischer belted an RBI triple to bring Ranweiler home for the third run. Jordan Fischer then brought Nick Fischer home with a standup double.

The game got out of hand in the second inning, when New Ulm scored 11 runs on nine hits, which included a three-run triple by Ranweiler. Everyone in the New Ulm lineup except for Jordan Fischer scored at least one run in the second inning with Cooper Forbrook, Cooper Yackley and Brandon Mehlhop each scoring two runs apiece.

Jordan Fischer later recorded a second RBI double in the third inning before eventually scoring Post 132’s 17th run of the game.

Alex Lund took the win in Game 1. He gave up five runs, three earned on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts in five innings pitched. Sam Schwieger took the loss in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

Post 132 did not bust things open until late in Game 2, during which it scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 10-0 lead. Jordan Fischer gave up three runs, two earned to Fairmont in the bottom of the seventh before ending the game with a strikeout.

Yackley went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and one run scored, while Mehlhop had a two-RBI single in the seventh inning.

Tyler Roufs got the win on the mound, having tallied seven strikeouts and given up no runs in the five-inning effort. Collin Stueber took the loss in six innings pitched, having given up eight runs, five earned on nine hits.

New Ulm Gold hosts Sioux Falls East at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Park before heading up to the Gopher Classic.

“Hopefully we continue to play well,” Drexler said. “Last weekend, we just needed a couple more plays in a couple games and we would’ve been moved on to Sunday. But we didn’t make those plays and hopefully this weekend we can do that.”
