All-Journal boys’ golf: Laffen, Christensen lead All-Journal golf team

Sleepy Eye United

The 2016 All-Journal Boys’ Golfer of the Year, Laffen helped lead Sleepy Eye United to the Class A state meet, where the team finished third.

Laffen finished fourth overall at the tournament with a two-day total of 155, his personal best at the tournament. He returns next year for a shot at the state title.

Caleb Christensen, sr., Sleepy Eye United

Christensen had his best season, finishing fifth at the state tournament with a 156. He and Ben Laffen helped lead Sleepy Eye United to another state meet, where it finished third overall.

Christensen will continue his career at the college level next year at Concordia University.

Glavine Schugel, fr.,

New Ulm

Schugel led New Ulm to its first state appearance since 2013 and finished tied for 18th with a two-day score of 150. His season scoring average is 75.6 and his low rounds for the season was 70 (2-under) at Day 1 of the Section 3AA tournament at Oakdale Golf Club.

He also shot a 71 (1-under) at The Ridges at Sand Creek. This season he was the medalist in five events (tournaments and duals) and finished second in the Big South Conference tournament and ended the season with all-conference honors. With three seasons left, Schugel and the Eagles could see a long run of success.

Gunnar Cowing, sr.,

New Ulm

Cowing averaged an 83.4 over 18 holes and his low round was 75 at the Fairmont Invite. He also shot a 78 at the Jordan Invitational. He was named to the All-Big South Conference team in 2016 and helped lead New Ulm to the state tournament this past year.

Mason Kretsch, fr., Springfield

Kretsch made his first state tournament this year for the Tigers and finished tied for 16th with a 165. He averaged 42.8 over nine holes this year and is a two-time All-Conference selection.

Aiden Guggisberg, 8th grade, New Ulm

Guggisberg’s season average was 82.2 and his low rounds for the season was 77 at the Marshall Invite and a 78 at the Jordan Invitational. He was all-conference in 2017 and helped lead New Ulm to the Class AA state tournament this past season.

Sam Pfingsten, jr., MVL

Pfingsten is a two-time state participant, having qualified in 2016 and 2017. He averaged a 40.3 on nine holes and 82.5 on 18 holes this year and finished tied for 43rd at state with a 175. He has one more season left with the Chargers and is hoping for big things next year.

Luke Gartner, jr., MVL

Gartner qualified for the state meet this year, averaging a 43.3 over nine holes and 86.4 on 18 holes. The two-time All-Conference selection shot a 174 at state, which tied him for 40th overall.
