Numerous Eagles medal at Section 2AA track meet

ST. PETER — With his last shot, Jordan Hillesheim just barely missed his chance to qualify for state.

The New Ulm senior made the finals in four events but came up short in each of them during Day 2 of the Section 2AA track and field meet on Friday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Hillesheim placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.44), third in the 200-meter dash (22.47), seventh in the long jump (20-6.50) and 11th in the high jump (6-6.00).

Despite the fact that Hillesheim fell short of reaching that next level, first-year New Ulm track coach Bre Olson said it is still an accomplishment in itself to make the finals in four different events at the Class AA level.

“It’s unique, we don’t see that from a lot of athletes that we go against,” Olson said. “Especially in our section — we’re the second-smallest school in our section. With the schools that we see like Chanhassen, Shakopee, Waconia — those schools are so much bigger than us so the fact that he was able to be so competitive in all four events is really impressive.”

Hillesheim, who will play football at Division II’s Northern State University this fall, had big expectations after winning the 100-meter prelims with an 11.25, but was outdone in the finals by Mankato West’s Jake Makela (10.99) and Mound-Westonka’s Dylan Smerillo (11.05) — both of which ran automatic-qualifying times in AA.

Senior Cooper Yackley beat Hillesheim in the long jump with a fourth-place finish. Yackley, who is a starter on the New Ulm baseball team, had competed in only three meets prior to this one and still managed to take home a section medal.

“As someone who regularly does not get to practice technique or is used to finding their mark or keeping their steps and having that muscle memory, it’s impressive,” Olson said. “He did end up beating [Hillesheim] and he does work at it every single day and I’m not diminishing his performance at all because Cooper does not have four events. But the fact that Cooper could score and place fourth in pretty impressive.”

Sophomore Sean Howk managed to earn a medal in the 400-meter dash, placing fifth in Friday’s finals after qualifying for the last spot. Howk, who is a three-time state-qualifying wrestler, ran from the infamous Lane 9 in the finals and had a finish that was cause for optimism.

“He had the worst lane preference — he ran in Lane 9 the whole way — so it’s very impressive that he earned a medal,” Olson said. “That can really be a mental game and it was for him, he was not looking forward to running in Lane 9 the whole way around and he really overcame that obstacle.”

Junior Sarah Longtin, who was a state-qualifying gymnast this past winter, placed fifth overall in the pole vault, while fellow junior Emma Gauert placed eighth.

Eighth-grader Paige Kalis placed eighth in the girls’ 200 with a time of 26.98 and was seventh in the long jump with a with a mark of 14-4.50.

Freshman Olivia Owens and senior Claire Dobie earned medals during Wednesday’s finals. Owens recorded a jump of 5-00 for sixth in the high jump, while Dobie threw 107-3.00 in discus to finish sixth.

“Her technique is going to continue to improve and she works really hard at high jump, so I think she’s going to be a state contender in the next few years,” Olson said of Owens. “Claire Dobie, she’s usually a pretty tough shot and she earned some medals in discus, so that was exciting.”

Ben Mathiowetz qualified for state in both the wheelchair shot put and wheelchair discus events for the second-straight year.
