NORTH MANKATO — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey 6-0 in a Section 2A playoff matchup at Caswell Park on Saturday.

Anna Lux pitched a seven-inning two-hit shutout for the Knights.

St. Mary’s put up four runs in the second inning on five hits. Megan Labat dropped a bunt along the third base line to advance Mallory Helget to second on a close throw from the MLA-C defense.

“We made solid contact, it was the matter of getting things going,” St. Mary’s coach Wendy Owens said. “The middle of our line up did a nice job to start that for us, we know that we have to set the tone.”

Madison Hoffman and Dani Weiss recorded RBI singles and Ali Beltz tripled into right field tallying two RBIs in the second inning.

Lux was on a roll early as she tallied five strikeouts and no walks with no hits in the first three innings of the game for St. Mary’s.

“I don’t want our defense to get to comfortable, [Lux] sets the tone,” Owens said. “We still need to be able to play defense and we showed that later in the game.”

The Knights added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to add to their lead. MLA-C recorded two quick outs in the inning before Weiss reached on an infield single with two down for St. Mary’s.

Beltz continued to drive the ball hard, early in the count, as she doubled into left field bringing Weiss in from second. Beltz led the Knights going 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

MLA-C put a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning when Margo Stoesz singled past the shortstop advancing to scoring position on a fielder’s choice by the Knights.

Lux got out of the inning earning her sixth strikeout and stranding the runner at second base.

The Knights added one run in the bottom half of the sixth inning from two hits.

Carnell pitched six innings with five strikeouts and no walks giving up 10 hits in the loss.

Weiss went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and scored two runs.
