GFW, MVL/NUC advance athletes in Section 2A

MONTGOMERY — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral advanced numerous athletes out of the Section 2A, Subsection 7 track and field meet on Thursday in Montgomery.

The GFW boys and MVL/NUC girls finished third out of seven teams, while the MVL/NUC boys and GFW girls finished seventh.

Senior long-distance runner Samuel Stresemann headlined the Thunderbirds’ automatic qualifiers with first-place finishes in the 800- and 1600-meter runs. His time of 4:32.88 at Thursday’s meet beat his mark from the Tomahawk Conference meet by 14 seconds.

The GFW boys’ 4×800-meter relay team also placed first to advance.

Other automatic qualifiers for the GFW boys include Tylor Hopp (third in 400), Ryan Albrecht (second in 3200), Javier Victorino (fourth in 3200), James Victorino (fourth in 300 hurdles, second in high jump) and Casey Wersal (second in discus).

Automatic qualifiers for the Chargers include Izayah Harrison (third in 100), David Moreno (third in shot put) and Brandon Karstens (third in discus).

Junior Shylo Hilbert highlighted the MVL/NUC girls’ performances with a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash. She was also part of the first-place 4×100 team and second-place 4×200 team.

Senior Brittany Sanders placed first in the long jump. Other automatic qualifiers for MVL/NUC girls include Lexi Fosburgh (fourth in 200), Ruth Rider (fourth in 400), Abby Nelson (third in 1600), Cham Omot (fourth in high jump) and Emma Nelson (third in shot put).

Automatic qualifiers for the GFW girls include Jenifer Woods (third in 200) and Grace Feder (third in 800, fourth in 1600).

The Section 2A meet will be held on June 3 at Mankato West.
