NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran finished its regular season on a strong note led by seniors Brittany Sanders and Cham Omot.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Madelia 56-35 in a nonconference girls’ basketball game on Monday night.

Sanders led the Chargers (10-15) with 16 points, while Omot added 12 and Jordyn Keranen had nine.

Melodie DeVlaeminck led the Blackhawks (4-21) with 10 points, while Lizzie Cooling chipped in six.

With a quick 8-2 lead for Madelia, things looked off to a good start. Madelia coach Josh Goodburn said that he was glad to see his girls start off quick and make good passes, but that it didn’t last.

“Usually comes down to bad passing,” Goodburn said. “We weren’t talking much on defense. If we would have done a few things different, it might have been a little closer game. I think we showed that when we started this game that we can run with this team, but we couldn’t finish it.”

As MVL began to press, Madelia began to show signs of weakness, turning the ball over numerous times and allowing MVL to inch closer to tying the game. With Madelia up 11-8, MVL tied the game on a Sanders 3-pointer and went on a 20-2 run to lead 28-13.

During the run, Keranen sank back-to-back 3-pointers and Sanders converted on an and-one. Madelia’s Thejen Luoth put in the last bucket of the half to make the deficit 29-17.

MVL coach Rollin Timm said that something under the radar that went well was how his rotations played.

“I thought we had a good rotation,” Timm said. “It didn’t drop off, it showed up out there. Everybody came out to play, which was nice. We’ve had some let downs when we’ve been trying to work our rotation, but I thought tonight it worked well.”

MVL was unwilling to show signs of wear in the second half, as a mid-range jumper by Omot made the score 42-21. After Madelia got its 2 points back on a bucket by Stef Sotelo, Keranen knocked in her third 3 of the night to give MVL the 45-23 lead.

Madelia struggled to knock down free throws for most of the night, but when DeVlaeminck hit both of hers, Sanders wiped them away with another 3-pointer to give the Chargers a 22-point lead on their way to the win.

Rollin Timm said that his girls need to be prepared to make more shots when they travel to Nicollet for a Section 2A, North Subsection playoff game next Tuesday.

Madelia plays at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a Section 2A, South Subsection playoff game Thursday.
