NEW ULM — Nick Fischer had 18 points and 15 rebounds for Minnesota Valley Lutheran as it rolled past Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 75-34 in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday.

The Chargers (9-3, 4-1 Tomahawk) jumped out to a 10-1 run within the first 3 minutes only to take a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

“I liked our intensity that we came out with,” MVL coach Craig Morgan said. “It started from the tip and continued til the buzzer at the end of the game. Every guy on the bench came out and played hard.”

The Thunderbirds (2-9, 2-4), who have now lost eight-straight games, shot an abysmal 20.6 percent (7-for-34) from the floor in the first half and 27.3 percent (15-for-55) for the game. Bad shot selection plagued them from the get-go, thanks in part to the Chargers’ defensive effort.

“That’s what happens if you play some good defense is you’re gonna force them to take some shots that are iffy,” Morgan said. “We outrebounded them too in that first half just with our size and their lack of size. They’re a scrappy, hard-working team, it’s just we were bigger than they were.”

Coming out of the locker room with a 44-19 lead, A.J. Buboltz got a behind-the-head pass from Jake Kettner in transition for a layup that started a 14-1 run for the Chargers.

Buboltz had a solid night, scoring 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting with a game-high eight assists.

“He’s been cutting loose lately,” Morgan said of Buboltz. “He’s got a lot of talent and a lot of ability. Once now that he’s cut loose, he’s a leader out there. And the guys pick up on that.”

Kettner and fellow sophomore starter Matt Munsen both had nine points apiece, while Matt Stein had six and Jace Marotz had five off the bench.

Martin Ortiz led the Thunderbirds with eight points, while David Herrera had seven.

MVL hosts Springfield on Friday, while GFW hosts Cedar Mountain/Comfrey on Thursday.
