Hindt moves to 799 as Bobcats win 2 of 3

Staff photo by Jake Calhoun Wabasso/Red Rock Central’s Nick Altermatt, ranked No. 9 in Class AA, ties up with Minneota’s No. 2-ranked Alec Bueltel in the 170-pound match of a dual meet on Saturday at the Wabasso Athletic Center. Bueltel escaped with a 4-3 win.

WABASSO — Wabasso/Red Rock Central won two of three dual meets during a special weekend, moving co-head coach Gary Hindt closer to a more special milestone.

W/RRC beat Adrian Area 72-6 and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 39-19, losing only to Minneota 47-21 in between those wins during the Wabasso dual meet invitational on Saturday at the Wabasso Activity Center.

The six-team event was held in conjuncture with Wabasso’s Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, which included Hindt’s first-ever state champion, Dan Zimmer, who won the 132-pound title as a senior in 1976. Other inductees included Lawrence and Pauline Kallevig, Joel Samyn, Sheila Bruns (posthumously) and Leo Grossman (posthumously).

With the two wins, Hindt moves to 799 career wins as a wrestling head coach. Reaching the big 800 would put Hindt at No. 7 nationally in all-time wins and No. 2 in Minnesota, behind only Scot Davis’ 984 career wins at Owatonna.

“I appreciate it happening, but I think it’s more important that it happens for our program and community,” Hindt said. “I can handle it. If I never got it or if I got it next match or it never came, I can live with that. … They all mean something, I don’t want to downplay that it’s the second-most wins in the state — that’s quite awesome. But I’m in awe of it.”

The Bobcats (16-3), ranked No. 7 in Class AA, won 72-straight points against the Dragons (2-10) in a string that included seven forfeits. They also got bonus-point victories from Calvin Anderson (fall at 132 pounds), Cody Dudgeon (fall at 152) and No. 9-ranked Nick Altermatt (fall at 170).

The Bobcats ran into some trouble against the Vikings (8-2), ranked No. 7 in Class A, when they lost five-straight matches — all by bonus points — to begin the dual. Tyson Doubler had a gutsy showing in the 138-pound match, where he was poised to beat Landon Rolbiecki by 5-0 decision but managed to work him to his back for the pin with 9 seconds remaining.

“You have a choice, you figure let’s try to get a four-point, maybe we’ll cut him or he’ll catch him, but that kid stopped wrestling,” Hindt said. “Tyson locked up a nice near-side bar and he wasn’t expecting it. He went over and woo, where am I at? He didn’t know. And boom — pinned. That’s a kid who took advantage of a situation; he didn’t quit wrestling.”

After a 4-1 win by No. 8-ranked Jared Schroepfer at 145 pounds, Dudgeon nearly got the Bobcats back into it with a win against Cole VanOverbeke at 152. However, Dudgeon gave up nine back points in the second period from the bottom and even though he fought until the buzzer, he still fell short in an 11-7 loss.

The match of the day pitted Altermatt against Minneota’s Alec Bueltel, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class A, in the 170-pound contest. Altermatt nearly notched a takedown in the closing seconds, but Bueltel hung on for a 4-3 win.

“You’ve got two guys who will probably place in the state tournament — I would guess that they’re both going to get there and they’re both going to be successful — so what do you do?” Hindt said. “They both had some really great moves and that’s what happens — he had one more point better than us.”

Altermatt got back to his winning ways with an 18-0 technical fall of the Falcons’ Cullen Lewis.

In the two matches he wrestled, senior 195-pounder Devan Liebl won by fall and fellow senior Mitchell Fulton won by fall and major decision at 182. Like those two, Doubler finished 3-0 on the day.

Anderson won his third match by pinning ACGC’s Dylan Studenmann in 48 seconds.

The Falcons’ Shane Whitcomb upset Schroepfer at 145 by 10-3 decision.

After getting pinned in his first two matches, heavyweight Kyle Jacobson won by fall in the third period of his final match.

Hindt has a shot at his 800th win on Tuesday, when W/RRC hosts Marshall. The dual meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Wabasso Activity Center.
