NEW ULM — Wabasso/Red Rock Central stayed true to form in winning both its duals, while New Ulm Area picked up its first win of the season.

W/RRC beat Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area 64-12 before beating New Ulm Area 51-21, while New Ulm Area won the final dual of the night 53-27 in a nonconference wrestling triangular on Thursday at New Ulm High School.

The Bobcats (3-1) benefited from a full lineup in all but one slot for both duals, with Mason Irlbeck (106 pounds), No. 7-ranked Jared Schroepfer (145/152), Cody Dudgeon (152/160), Cole Werner (160/170), No. 10 Nick Altermatt (170/182), Mitchell Fulton (182/195) and Devan Liebl (195/220) all picking up two wins apiece.

Fulton, however, had a tough match against the Knights’ Garrett Gillman in the 182-pound match of the first dual, during which he trailed late in the third period and needed a takedown with 0:05 remaining for the comeback 9-8 decision.

Gillman managed to take a lead into the third period by countering Fulton’s aggressive shots, which worked for him until that final minute.

“He showed some guts, that’s really all there was to it,” W/RRC coach Brett Bartholomaus said. “He got in a hole early and showed some heart and some guts and was able to pull it out in the end. That’s a step in the right direction for him.”

The Bobcats were without Jared Welch, who is ranked No. 3 at 220 pounds, with an undisclosed injury.

Sophomore Calvin Anderson nearly upset New Ulm Area sophomore Sean Howk in the 138-pound match of the second dual, almost pinning him on two different occasions. However, Howk avoided the fall and managed to secure a reversal at the buzzer to give him the win with an 11-10 decision.

“Sean got up early and [Anderson] just kept fighting back, fighting back,” New Ulm Area coach John Rieser said. “Sean kept his composure though — got put to his back but got off — and walked away with the W after keeping his composure.”

Junior Rebekah Hoppe tallied a big win at 120 pounds for the Eagles (1-3), beating the Bobcats’ Alex Schmiesing 4-2 to start a five-match winning streak. Hoppe tallied a takedown early in the first before riding Schmiesing out in the second period, fending him off at the end for the win.

“Rebekah had a nice win in that first match,” Rieser said. “She works hard, competes with the boys and I’m real impressed with that win she got.”

The Eagles managed to get two bonus-point wins from Cole and Hunter Ranweiler as well as a full-length technical fall from senior Ryan Wacker and a fall from freshman heavyweight Colby Wenninger in 0:18 in the final dual.

New Ulm Area competes next Thursday at Blue Earth Area.
