NEW ULM — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop picked up a 66-44 win against New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Halley Busse led the Thunderbirds with 22 points, while Katelynn Firle added 18.

For the Greyhounds, Jenna Helget led with 12 points and Rose Hazuka had nine.

GFW shot the ball better all around, hitting 41 percent from the field while Cathedral shot 28 percent. GFW scored 42 points in the paint compared to Cathedral’s 16 points in the paint.

The game started with two quick Greyhound buckets by Nicole Gangelhoff and Becca Schwarz. Cathedral took it’s biggest lead of the night with a basket by Hazuka to make the score 15-10.

From there on, GFW began to take control of the game, taking a 16-15 lead on a basket by Firle. Firle added another basket on the Thunderbirds next trip up the floor to further increase the lead.

Halley Busse gave the Thunderbirds their biggest lead of the first half on a free throw to take an 11-point lead. Cathedral fired back near the end of the first half to close the gap to just six points at halftime.

Halley Busse started the second half out scoring five quick points on a 3-pointer and a basket to give GFW a 35-24 jump start to the half. GFW began to bully Cathedral in the second half, increasing it’s lead to 21 before Cathedral head coach Dave Wilfahrt took a timeout down 58-37.

Wilfahrt thought his girls played well in the first half, but he felt that the hustle GFW showed all game really took it’s toll on them.

“GFW is a very good team and they just hustle and never slow down,” Wilfahrt said. “They’ve got a lot of girls that are just moving around very fast. We did a nice job with them in the early part of the game, but they [GFW] just kept plugging away.”

GFW took it’s largest lead of the game, a 25-point lead, on a steal by Miah Busse and a pass in transition to Halley Busse to stretch the lead 62-37.

GFW head coach Ryan Jacobson thought that the runs his team put together really helped it secure the victory.

“Basketball is a game of runs and we had a couple real nice runs,” Jacobson said. “I think it was about the 9-minute mark in the second half where we put together three or four defensive possessions — forced a couple of turnovers which led to leak outs and kind of stretched it out to about 20 and I felt good about that defensive push.”

GFW moves to 1-1 on the year and 1-1 in the conference and Cathedral falls to 1-2 on the year and 1-1 in the conference.

GFW next plays on Friday at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. Cathedral’s next game is also Friday at Springfield.
