NEW ULM — A couple big upsets highlighted New Ulm Area’s season-opening losses in its first-ever dual meets at the new high school gym.

New Ulm Area blew a 31-point lead in its dual against Waseca, falling 42-37 before getting beat 54-21 by No. 12-ranked Fairmont/Martin County West in a Big South Conference wrestling triangular on Tuesday.

The headline win for the Eagles (0-2, 0-2 Big South) was eighth-grader Cole Ranweiler’s 3-1 decision against the Red Bulls’ Jordan Wolter, who is ranked No. 8 in Class AA, at the 126-pound match.

Ranweiler held a 1-0 lead against Wolter and almost rode him out in the second period before yielding the escape with 0:05 to go. Ranweiler then secured a reversal at the 1:29 mark of the third period and rode Wolter out for the 3-1 win.

“I did a lot of running, working in practice as hard as I can,” Ranweiler said. “I didn’t give up through the match.”

Senior Ryan Wacker had an interesting finish to his match at 132 pounds against the Red Bulls’ Payton Anderson, during which he was awarded a reversal at the buzzer after a wild scramble that gave him a 2-1 win. F/MCW coach Adam Williamson protested the call at the scorers’ table, but to no avail.

Wacker, Cole Ranweiler, Hunter Ranweiler and Sean Howk all went 2-0 for the Eagles, who led 37-6 in their dual against the Bluejays (1-7, 1-2) before giving up six-straight falls from the 160-pound match on up to lose 42-37.

Going into the season, New Ulm Area coach John Rieser stressed that his team was a little green in the middle-to-upper weights and Tuesday night was solid proof of that.

“Our upper weights are inexperienced,” Rieser said. “We graduated everyone from 170 on up, so everybody in there is either [in their] first year on varsity, a little inexperienced and probably haven’t wrestled two, three years for some of these guys. They are inexperienced and we’ll keep working with them and hopefully at the end of the year they’ll be improved. That’s all we’re looking for is improvement.”

Before said losing streak, sophomore Lane Miller had an exciting finish to his match at 152 pounds, during which he pinned Blake Wendland in 3:49. Wendland led 2-0 after the first period before intentionally letting Miller go from the down position at the 1:35 mark of the second.

From there, Miller kept shooting and finally landed Wendland on his back for the eventual fall.

“Lane reacted when the kid shot in — stayed low, drove through him and drove him right to his back,” Rieser said. “Lane’s a strong kid. If he gets him on his back, he’s going to pin him.”

Jackson Bode won by fall at 113 pounds against Waseca’s John Mortensen in 1:29, while Noah Linscheid pinned F/MCW’s Dominick Ortiz in 5:48.

New Ulm Area hosts Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area and Wabasso/Red Rock Central for another triangular at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
