Wabasso defeats Cathedral in 3 sets

NEW ULM – While it was a loss, it was a memorable night for New Ulm Cathedral senior Nicole Gangelhoff.

Gangelhoff broke the school record for career digs in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 loss to Wabasso on Thursday. The previous record was 566 and she broke the record during the first set. Gangelhoff tallied 22 digs during the match.

“[Gangelhoff] is an outstanding back row player, she broke the record in only two years,” Cathedral coach Becky Wilfahrt said. “Gangelhoff can read hitters really well, she is just scrappy.”

The back row of the Greyhounds had their hands full, as the Rabbits opened the match with strong hitting up front. Scoring was a back-and-forth battle until Wabasso’s Alison Benz delivered a kill to break a 7-7 tie. Wabasso outside hitter Maddy Guetter led the first set with four kills.

“[Guetter] has had a great season, but the last couple weeks she has played really well, front row and back row,” Wabasso coach Barb Johnson said.

Cathedral’s front row play was significantly better during the second set, fueled from the continuous hard work from the back.

Jenna Helget was strong defensively for the Greyhounds, ending the night with 20 set assists and seven kills. The Greyhounds found themselves in a 14-8 deficit in the second set when Gangelhoff’s serving brought them to within three points. Rose Hazuka and Becca Schwarz both had one kill to assist in the run.

Wabasso started the third set with the serve as Lainy Rohlik went on a 7-0 serving run with one ace.

Cathedral was in a 22-10 deficit as it started a 7-1 run to bring the score 23-16. Gangelhoff added an ace as she held the serve for six points.

Hazuka led the Greyhounds with nine kills.

Goblirsch tallied 18 digs for Wabasso and Guetter had 18 digs and 14 kills. Benz finished with 11 kills. Rohlik was 14-of-14 serving with one ace for the Rabbits.

The Greyhounds will travel to Sleepy Eye to take on the Indians at 7p.m. on Thursday. Wabasso will host the Indians at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
