Steel win home opener

NEW ULM – It was a great way for the New Ulm Steel to open their inaugural season at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Five different Steel players scored goals and Steel goalie Jon Albers recorded 38 saves as New Ulm topped Alexandria 5-3 in front of 854 fans.

Alex Nagel, Alex Egle, Orlando Scherz, Santeri Rajakillo and Cory Martinez each scored a goal with Nagel getting the first Steel goal of the franchise.

The Blizzard outshot New Ulm 38-27 but were kept in the game by Albers, who was solid in the net.

New Ulm jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals from Nagel and Egle which was a difference from their first game when they fell behind 3-0 to Granite City after the first period.

“We came out of the gate a lot better,” said Steel coach Jay Witta. “We rolled four lines – they all contributed and our defense got involved. Alby played a great game in goal and kept us in the game.”

Witta said that his team was sluggish early in the second period. “But then we turned it on,” Witta said.

Two goals by the Steel (Scherz and Rajakillo) in a span of less than a minute gave New Ulm a 4-1 lead.

The Steel (1-1) are home again next Saturday when they host Breezy Point at 7 p.m.
