Buena Vista takes down MLC in 4 sets

NEW ULM – While the second set proved to be a successful one for the Martin Luther College volleyball team, every other set was a struggle as Buena Vista defeated MLC 25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 25-22 on Wednesday in nonconference action.

The first set was close most of the way. Buena Vista led 5-1 and 6-2 early on, but MLC eventually closed the gap to 11-9 after a kill by Moriah Hackbarth.

The Beavers once again began to pull away thanks to some hitting errors by the Knights. Up 18-13, MLC once again cut into the lead and trimmed the gap to 20-17 and later 24-21 before Buena Vista closed the first set.

The Knights took the second set, jumping out to a 3-1 lead early on. The Beavers eventually tied it at 4-4 and both teams went back and forth a majority of the set. The Beavers led 14-11 on a hitting error by the Knights, but again the Knights tied it and later took an 18-17 lead on a kill by Jade St. Germaine.

Buena Vista led 20-19 and 21-20, but the Knights finished strong to take the second set.

Buena Vista won the third set convincingly, but it took awhile to establish a lead. Tied at 9-9, BVU suddenly led 15-9 and stretched the lead to 20-10, closing out the third set 25-15.

The Beavers closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set. MLC’s record dropped to 3-7 on the season.

St. Germaine and Hackbarth led MLC with 10 kills each. Kira Grev finished with 12 digs and Emily Byhardt finished with 18 set assists.
