Hermann Monument / Hermann Height Park

The 106th Congress of the United States designated the Hermann Monument in New Ulm to be an official symbol of all citizens of German heritage! (2000). The Hermann Monument, erected in 1897, was built in memory of an ancient Teutonic hero, Hermann of Cherusci. Hermann is honored as the liberator of Germany from Rome in 9 A.D., and the father of Germanic independence. The 102-foot-tall monument is 2nd only to the taller copper-sheathed Statue of Liberty and towers over the city of New Ulm. The monument was designed by architect Julius Berndt, dedicated in 1897, and was refurbished in 1999. There was also a major refurbishment of the statue in 2004. The monument provides a spectacular view of New Ulm and the Minnesota River Valley. The monument is surrounded by Hermann Heights Park, one of the city's best picnic areas. Other park amenities include a large play area, restrooms and two screened-in picnic shelters for picnics, family gatherings or parties. Each shelter can seat approximately 100 people and is equipped with picnic tables, a serving counter and lights. Please call the Park and Recreation office at 507-359-8344 to reserve your shelter. Reservations for the following year can be taken the day after Labor Day of the previous year. Location: Center Street and Monument Street Hours: 11 am-7 pm daily Memorial Weekend Friday, May 26, through Labor Day, September 4. Also special hours during Oktoberfest. Admission: Cost: $1.00
