NEW ULM - "Boom, boom, boom!"
Due to popular demand and local support, HermannFest 2014 - including an 11-gun cannon shoot, music and fireworks - begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the Hermann Monument.
In addition to self-directed Hermann Monument tours, music begins at noon with the Wendinger Band, a program at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Concord Singers and Sleepy Eye Concertina Band before the park closes at 5 p.m.
Harman Park opens at noon with co-rec kickball, sand volleyball and bean bag tournaments until 5:30 p.m.
Then it's "Thunder in the Valley" with an 11-gun cannon shoot by the New Ulm Battery and music by the New Ulm Municipal Band.
Time Machine, a Rochester-based high-energy tribute project including four costume changes, makes its New Ulm debut from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. with "Night Fever," music of the 1970s. A fireworks show over Hermann Monument follows.

"The New Ulm City Council proposed funding another fireworks show this year, as long as someone else ran the event, which our organization agreed to do," said Hermann Monument Society President Tom Furth. "This goes back to 2009 when we celebrated the 2000th anniversary of (Cheruscan Chieftan Hermann) Arminius," (who negotiated a tribal alliance to defend Germania from Roman conquest) "with cannons, fireworks and music. Last year, it was the 150th Anniversary of New Ulm Battery and 125th Anniversary of New Ulm's Hermann Monument."
Furth said the firm putting on the fireworks show is the same one that does pyrotechnics at Minnesota Vikings NFL home football games. "It should be a very, very good show with aerial and ground fireworks," he said.
Furth described Time Machine as four shows within a show.
"We recommend people bring their own chairs," he said.
