SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team earned its first win of the season 2-0 against UW-Superior on Wednesday.
The game was called in the 76th minute due to lightning in the area.
MLC (1-1) was able to do its scoring in the first half, breaking open a 0-0 game on a Hailey Johnson goal off a free kick in the 36th minute, and then scoring again three minutes later when Lauren Maertz put home a rebound to give the Knights a 2-0 edge. The goals were the first of the season for both players, and the first of Johnson's career.
The MLC defense made that two-goal lead stick, holding UW-Superior (0-2) to 10 shots total and three shots on goal for the game. Goalkeeper Keely Keese stopped all three shots she faced to earn the shutout.
The Knights finished with a 13-10 edge in total shots, and a 7-3 lead in shots on goal. Johnson led all players with seven shots and five shots on goal.
MLC will return to action at 2 p.m. on Sept. 7 when it hosts Buena Vista in its home opener.
Macalester 3, MLC 1
ST. PAUL - The Martin Luther College volleyball team lost 3-1 at Macalester 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19 on Wednesday.
The Knights (2-3) finished the match with an attack percentage of .109, while the Scots hit .218.
Kira Grev led MLC with 11 kills and Sara Willems finished with eight kills and an attack percentage of .368.
Miranda Maasz led the Knights with 25 assists, while MacCartney Mendolla had a team-high 16 digs.
MLC will return to action on Friday, when it plays in two-day tournament hosted by Bethel. The first match will be against Buena Vista at 4 p.m.
