NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team started its season with a pair of wins at the St. Olaf Tournament, defeating Waldorf 3-1 and Macalester 3-1.
The Knights lost the first set of the season-opening match against Waldorf, but came back to win 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14.
MLC struggled on the attack in the first set, hitting -.042 with 10 errors in the game, but committed 13 the rest of the way en route to a final attack percentage of .114 for the match.
Sara Willems finished as the top hitter for the Knights with 12 kills and an attack percentage of .375, while Kira Grev was also in double figures with 11 kills.
Morgan Kumbier and Rylee Weisensel each finished with four blocks to lead the team, while Emily Neeb had a match-best 24 digs in he back row. Miranda Maasz finished with 27 assists to go with 11 digs and one block. MacCartney Mendolla had four service aces to lead the Knights.
MLC completed the Friday sweep by defeating Macalester 25-16, 25-21, 12-25, 26-24.
Grev finished with a team-best 13 kills, hitting .167 while the team hit .070 for the match. Willems and Kayla Schoeneck each had seven kills.
Maasz had a match-high 34 assists, while Mendolla led the team with 17 digs.
The Knights will play a pair of matches on the final day of the tournament on Saturday with the first match coming against St. Olaf at 10 a.m. at Carleton College.
MANKATO, Minn. -First-year player Erik Hansen shot a 69 in the first golf meet of the season Friday at Mankato Country Club. The Knights lost the match against Bethany Lutheran 320-321.
Hansen led all players with his round of 69, while Alex Lindemann, Joel Sonntag and Craig Wilke shot 80, 85 and 87, respectively, to round out the MLC lineup.
Neither team featured a full women's team, but the were represented by Liz Mantz, who shot 138 in her first-career match.
The Knights will return to action on Thursday, when they play in the BLC Invitational held at Ridges of Sand Creek GC in Jordan, Minn.
