NEW ULM - The New Ulm girl's tennis team opened its season with a 4-3 loss to Redwood Valley on Tuesday.
Despite the loss, New Ulm coach Kevin Maudal said he was pleased with how his team performed as a whole in its opener.
"Redwood Falls is a very strong team; they played well, went to a lot of deuces," Maudal said. "Overall, I would say every girl did really, really well considering this is their first real test."

At the No. 1 singles slot, sophomore Taylor Bolduan lost to senior Ahnna Malecek 6-4, 6-2.
But Bolduan said her first match of the season was better than she initially expected.
"My serving was good and as I got going my forehand got better," Bolduan said.
In the first set, Bolduan scaled an early 3-0 deficit to win the fourth game after a deuce. That was the first of three-straight games won for her before dropping three of the last four to lose 6-4.
Bolduan was successful in deceiving Malecek with short volleys hit lightly over the net for multiple points during the match. This was one of the shots that kept her in contention.
"She had to come up and get it and then hit it back, that's hard to get to," Bolduan said.
Malecek put the match away in the second set with four-straight games to win 6-2 for the Cardinals' first team point of the meet.
Freshman Jane Arnoldt won her debut match at the No. 4 singles slot, beating sophomore Jillian Reed 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"[Reed] was very comparable," Maudal said. "By the third set, Jane had finally figured out what she needed to do on each point."
Miriam Jakel and Meleah Reinhart won the No. 2 doubles match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Breanna Widmer and Emma Maudal won the No. 3 doubles match 7-5, 3-6, 10-4.
Maudal said Gracelyn and Maya Sarkar will be inserted into the lineup after a playoff on Wednesday that will determine where they would fit. Gracelyn, a senior, played at the No. 1 singles spot last season and Maya, a junior, was in the No. 1 doubles team.
Both were absent from the first week of practice, but should be ready for Friday's dual against River Valley at 4:30 p.m. at home.
