Earn Cash by entering Buckthorn Challenge: Sponsored by the New Ulm Park and Recreation Department. In addition, $1,200 cash is available through a grant from the Neighborhood Health Connection of Allina Health for the purpose of bringing community members together for camaraderie and healthy eco-exercise. (Eco-exercise is burning calories while improving the environment.) In this case, the exercise will be to learn to identify buckthorn, observe the effect of invasive species on our native woods, and reduce the burden of berry-bearing trees in the city. A team can enter one to six events over a 6-week period, beginning Saturday Aug. 16 to Sept. 27. A total of $1,200 will be awarded, $200 for the winning team of each six events. Each event lasts 2 hours, or $100/hour of eco-exercise. The six sessions run Aug. 16-22, Aug. 23-29, Aug. 30-Sept. 5, Sept. 6-12, Sept. 13-19, Sept. 20-26.
