NEW ULM - Unfamiliar pitching and late runs prompted New Ulm Legion Gold to a 9-2 victory against Worthington on Tuesday night at Johnson Park.
Gold, which made it into the Monday championship round games of the Gopher Classic this past weekend, relied on the arms of Grant Kannegiesser and Jake Gieseke in what was a close game until the final three innings.
"It's been an intense couple weeks and we're out of pitching pretty much," said Gold coach Jeremy Drexler. "Grant and Jake did a good job of throwing strikes tonight for guys that don't pitch. They did a good job keeping us in it."

Kannegiesser got the start and the win, having allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings of work. He notched a game-high five strikeouts.
Offensively, Gold made Worthington starter Blake Rogers work in his two innings on the mound, during which he threw 55 pitches.
Gieseke drove in Wyatt Peterson - who advanced two bases on a passed ball during the first pitch of the at-bat - with an RBI single to give Gold a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Peterson batted in Collin Helget with a short bunt single in the top of the second for a 2-0 Gold lead.
Nate Ray came in and pitched 3 1/3 innings for Rogers, who was tagged with the loss.
Ray kept Worthington in the game until the fifth inning, when Helget notched a two-RBI single and later faked the defense out on the base path to allow Judd Davis to score from third for a 5-1 lead.
Control became more of an issue for Ray after that - he walked three batters and hit another before allowing a three-run double to Nick Dewanz in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Gold a 9-2 lead.
Ray and Rogers combined for eight walks, five of which were tagged with runs.
"It's good to practice discipline," Drexler said. "We can't chase pitches above our hands and staying within ourselves and getting more pitches that we can hit."
Dewanz's three RBIs was a team high to complement his 2-for-3 night. Brach Kraus went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Helget went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.
Gold will return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday, when it plays at Litchfield. New Ulm Legion Blue will play the game before that at 1 p.m.
