NEW ULM - Mary S. Murphy, age 97, of New Ulm, formerly of Fairfax, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Reflections at Ridgeway in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, July 12, 2014, 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax with Father Jeffrey Horejsi officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred to St. Andrew's Stain Glass Windows.

Mary Susanna (Garrahy) Murphy was born on May 26, 1917, in Wellington Township, Renville County, Minn., to Patrick and Margaret (Reiff) Garrahy. Mary was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth. She received her education at St. Andrew's Parochial School and graduated from Fairfax High School. Mary furthered her education at Mankato State College receiving her two- year degree in Elementary Education in 1937, and her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1973. She was a life-long educator, holding positions at country school in Wellington Township, Elementary School in North Redwood, St. Andrew's Parochial School and Franklin Elementary School in Franklin. She was a proud and active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

On July 8, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to Curtis Murphy at St. Francis Church in Bakersfield, Calif. Their union was blessed with eight children. She was a loving mother and homemaker. Mary and Curtis shared 43 years of marriage before Curtis passed away on Nov. 30, 1987.

Mary had wide-ranging interests and enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, growing roses, reading, genealogy, macram, crocheting, quilting and traveling. After retirement she traveled frequently throughout the United States. She toured Europe and visited Ireland (twice) and Scotland. Mary was a long-time volunteer at the Brown County Historical Society and the AARP Senior Tax Preparation program.

Mary is survived by her sons, John Murphy of Mankato, Mark Murphy and his wife, Marsha of Gwinner, ND, and Jim Murphy and his wife, Coleen of Mankato; daughters, Marilyn Murphy Law and her husband, Doug of Scottsdale, AZ, Janet Murphy of Edina, Elaine Murphy of Minneapolis, and Lois Murphy of Madison, WI; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, John Garrahy of San Marcos, CA, and Edward Garrahy of Fairfax; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Curtis; son, Byron; sisters, Margaret and Catherine; and brothers, Patrick, Arthur, Eugene and Thomas.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Ridgeway on 23rd, Allina Health System Hospice and Dr. Sanjay Mishra for their loving care of Mary.
