Sleepy Eye went 1-1 on the day by first beating Bloomington Gold 8-7 in eight innings before getting beaten by Creighton Prep (Neb.) 12-2 in five on Day 2 of the Upper Midwest Classic. Both games were at Mueller Park.
In Game 1, Bloomington Gold pushed one run across the plate in the top of the eighth inning to break the tie and go ahead 7-6. But that was quickly squashed in the bottom half, when Sam Hirschboeck blasted a two-run triple with two outs on a 2-2 count to propel Post 7 to an 8-7.
Hirschboeck went 3-for-5 in that game, while Jon Kopacek was 4-for-4. Kopacek also got the win on the mound, having notched five strikeouts in a full eight innings of work.
"It's tough to play back to back, but that's the way the schedule was," said Sleepy Eye coach Bruce Woitas. "We had a nice first game, coming back we won that game in the bottom of the eighth inning. We got off to a good start in Game 2, but we just didn't pitch well to start the game - too many walks and you're playing a very good team that can hit the ball pretty well as well.
"We got down in a hole right away and that's how it ended up in Game 2."
David Surprenant took the loss in Game 2. He gave up eight runs - four earned - on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work with four walks and one strikeout.
Sleepy Eye began the game with four-straight hits - a leadoff double by Matt Berkner followed by singles each from Surprenant, Brandon Helget and Hirschboeck in that order. However, Post 7 left three stranded on base after tallying its only two runs of the game.
Creighton Prep scored four runs each in the first two innings, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to close out the game.
Craig Petrich got the win for Creighton Prep. He allowed two earned on seven hits with three walks, but tallied a game-high four strikeouts.
Mike Hirsch tallied four strikeouts in relief of Surprenant.
Sleepy Eye continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday, when it faces New Ulm Legion Blue at Johnson Park. It will then play another game based on its standing in the pool from there.
