NEW ULM - Stolen bases have been a staple of New Ulm VFW Gold this season.
Saturday night, Gold used three stolen bases in the first three innings and righthander Cole Wellmann did the rest as New Ulm slipped by Hutchinson 3-1 in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic.
Wellmann struck out three in getting the win for VFW Gold, now 9-6.

Cole Ellanson took the loss for Hutch. He allowed five hits and also fanned three.
Nick Fischer drove in two runs for New Ulm.
"Cole pitched a great game," said New Ulm coach Derek Wilfahrt. "He gave up that one run (in the second inning) when he was up 0-2 on the batter and made his only mistake. But he pitched a great game mixing up speeds."
New Ulm used its base-stealing ability in the first inning to score twice.
J.T. Hoffmann reached on an error by Hutchinson shortstop Matt Piechowski. He promptly swiped second before taking third on A.J. Lassas' infield base hit.
Hoffmann scored on an Ellanson wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Lassas came around to score when Fischer lined a base hit to center field.
"It was nice to score those two runs right away," Wilfahrt said. "It helps that we are able to steal bases. If we can steal bases we are going to. That paid off tonight."
Gold again used speed to score another run in the third when Cooper Yackley singled and stole second. He went to third on a Hoffmann infield single. Fischer struck out but when catcher Zac Ross dropped the ball, he had to throw to first to retire Fischer. On the throw to first, Yackley scampered home for the third Gold run.
"The loss to Delano earlier in the day hurt us," said Wilfahrt. "We have to look at it and say we have to play all seven innings. We scored in the first four innings but did not score again. But we bounced back again tonight."
